Speaker: Dr. Clayton Parks from Gateway Foundation
Clayton Parks went to medical school so that he could become a psychiatrist. He believed that being a doctor—and especially being a psychiatrist—involves showing people compassion and providing them help and hope during the darkest moments of their lives. Nowhere is this opportunity better realized than in the area of addiction medicine, where the individual patients and their families are suffering deeply, often alone, and in need of care, compassion, and empathy. And Clayton’s goal was to be able to provide those things for them. After receiving his medical degree from Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine in 2015 and completing an internship in combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Clayton finished his psychiatric residency at SIU in Springfield, IL, in 2020. He began working at Gateway Foundation right after graduation and has been here ever since. Clayton is a proud member of the Gateway Team as well as the American Psychiatric Association and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. His interests in psychiatry and addiction medicine have no boundaries, and his previous research has focused on psychiatric complications of chronic medical illnesses, acute blood pressure disturbances from taking antipsychotic medications, the use of kappa opioid antagonists and other anti-stress pharmacologic treatments to prevent relapse, mental health stigma, and complementary and alternative (CAM; i.e., not your typical Western medicine approach) approaches to treat mental and substance use disorders. Today he is grateful to be here with you facilitating a discussion on understanding the effects of mental health disorders in the workplace!
